Questions for the Week of Monday, April 20, 2009

  • Describe the types of gifts Jake gives Zinny. Why do you think he gives her these gifts?
  • What is Zinny's plan to make sure she completes the trail? Do you think this is a good plan? Explain.
  • Zinny makes up titles for herself throughout the book (Example: Zinnia Taylor: Explorer). What title not used in the book would you give her and why?

  1. A title, that is not used in the book, that I would give Zinny would be Zinny Taylor: The Perseverance. Because people tell her that she won't be able to complete the trail, that it won't happen, that she can't do it, and that she'll lose interest. But no matter how many times someone puts her down, she just kept going. She never gave up.

  2. Jake gives illegal gifts, like stolen dogs, to Zinny. I think he gives her these gifts because he's trying to do something nice, but he's doing bad things to do them.

    ReplyDelete
  3. p.s. he also gave her bottle caps, which Zinny collects as a hobby

  4. Jake gives Zinny kind of crazy gifts, like bottle caps! who gives some one bottle caps? Well I guess that someone like zinny would like that type of gift.

    ReplyDelete
  5. The gifts that he gives her are the bottle caps and the turtle. He gave them to her because he knew that she collected them so that is why. and I think that the caps that he gave her are caps that he found where he works and he found the turtle outside at a creek and desided to give it to her. and she likes the turtle as a pet and she has the bottle caps in a bag.

  6. Jake gives Zinny a box of bottle caps. He gave her the bottle caps because she collects them. I think Jake likes Zinny a lot. I think it is funny how May is getting so jealous. I can see her face when she sees Zinny with Jake.

  8. Hello dear students,

I am so thrilled that you are this excited to keep posting! I would like you to wait until we have read some of the chapters for this week before you start to answer the questions. Your perceptions of some of the characters or events may change after the readings and you will certainly find out more information that will be useful to your answers.
This time I will count it towards your requirements for the week, but in the future I will not count it if you post before the readings.

  9. Dear peoples,
Now that I've read the chapters for the week, I'll actually know what I'm talking about when I answer these questions.
Gifts that Jake gives Zinny are stollen stuff, but he does it because he likes her. So he's doing bad things for good reasons.
He has given her a stolen dog twice, a box of bottles caps, and his mom's engagement ring.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The other stuff he gives her are the dog and the engagement ring that was his moms mothers ring and she dosen't know

  11. My title I would give her is zinny the wonderer. Because she wonders about alot of thngs. Also I would call her Zinny the quiet one. Because she seems very quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The title name I would give Zinny would be (Zinnia Taylor=shy, because she doesn't really talk to people besides her family and Jake. I would also give her Zinnia Taylor = ultimate liar because when Jake stole the dog and gave it to Zinny, Zinny didn't want it so she gave Bingo back to Mrs.Butler which was kind of weird. And she said that Bingo got lost.

  13. Dear homeslices,
Zinny's plan to complete the trail is to get a horse so that she can go further into the trail faster and so that she won't get tired. She put up signs that say that she needs a cheep horse, and she's going to save up her money over the summer vacation for it. She is currently at the edge of the meadow on the trail, but there are barbwires and she is thinking about how to get around it.

  14. People-
Jake doesn't give Zinny his MOM'S engagement ring, he gives her the ring that his mom had that was his grandma's engagement ring.

  15. kk-
I disagree with you about her being the ultimate liar. Yes, she didn't tell Old Mrs. Butler who she was, but would you? I know I wouldn't. A crazy old lady coming at me with a broom would kind of freak me out. She also didn't steal Gobbler- that was Jake. Jake is the one that I would call the ultimate liar because of the things that he's stolen. I think the reason Zinny doesn't tell her family about Gobbler is because she doesn't want to be embarassed or to rat Jake out.

  16. I will agree with bk0323's opinion on Jakes gifts. He stole his great grandma's engagement ring from his mom' s drawer to give it to Zinny. although, Zinny should have given the ring back to Jake. Instead she buried it and lost it. Genius idea bury a family heirloom, and get it stolen, maybe Jake saw her bury it and dug it up and gave it to his mom when she got back. Or aunt Jessie took it. Those are both possibilities. What do you think bloggers?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well the gifts Jake gave Zinny were bottle caps, the dog, and the engagement ring. I think Jake gives Zinny these stolen gifts because I think he likes her. Or I think that he's trying to make May jealous.

  18. zinnys plan is to buy a horse so she can go to the path and back to her house quicker.S
he also put a wanted poster up for a horse.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The title I would give her is. Probably be The that she is a really good liar so I think that I should name her zinny talyor the professional trail blazer and I give her that because of the trail and how well she is clearing it and how fast she is doing it.

Please keep in mind that your responses to my questions should be detailed and thoughtful. Use specific details from the book to support your opinions. 25. Jake gives Zinny a box of bottle caps, a cricket,a turtle, a dog, and a ring. I think Jake feels he has to give Zinny something so she will like her. He might not have a lot of stuff to give her so he takes things she might like. Like the dog he just picked the dog up because it was following him.

    ReplyDelete
  26. MK-
Zinny didn't realize that it was a family heirloom and she did try to give it back to him, but he walked away, thus the reason she buried it. I think that neither Aunt Jessie nor Jake took the ring back. First of all, Jake just asked Zinny for the ring back, if he had taken it back he would've known that she didn't have it. Second of all, for Aunt Jessie to have taken that ring would be pretty hard, I think. Because she's dead. But then again, Uncle Nate and Ben both have seen her around their land. So, maybe.

  28. A nickname that I would give Zinny is Zinnia Taylor: the ultimate bluffer, because she had to lie about the dog being lost, and she lied about her being May when she was signing into school at the secretary's office.

  30. I think one of Zinny's nicknames should be Zinny-blamer because she blames herself for her cousin and Aunt's death's. It wasn't her fault that Rose died because people give germs all the time. She didn't kill her Aunt Jessie either because she didn't do anything.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Zinny's plan to make sure she completes the trail is to go camping along it. Yes, I do think that this is a good plan. She will now be able to work from dusk till dawn, so she'll have more time. I also think that it's kind of dangerous though. I think this because, like her mom said, there are bears and bobcats. Also, Zinny may not think that she's disturbing them, but nobody really understands other things other than themselves, so you can do things that bug things without realizing it. Mainly though, I think she'll get it done.

  32. HI!!! =]
Well some gifts that Jake is giving Zinny are, a turtle, cricket, rocks, bottle caps, dog, ring, and a horse. All of these items were given to Zinny from Jake. She thinks that Jake is just using her to get to May. I think that Jake genuinely likes Zinny.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Zinny's plan to get across the trail is to come home once every ten days. And she packed all of the things she needs to make it across like water, food, etc. And she wants to get a horse to make it easier to get across, so she put a sign up ant Mrs.Flint's store hoping that Jake would see it and steal one. Unfortunatly Jake gave Sam a horse and Sam thought that it was for May so he gave it to her. But the horse was a wooden horse and Zinny got really mad at Jake. I think that Zinny's plan is a good choice except that she should come home every five days because then her parents won't be as worried as they are even letting her go on the trail. Otherwise it's a good choice because she has everything she needs to stay alive for ten days. That's all I have to say about this question.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The plan that she is going to do I think is good. And I was kind of suprised when she took all of those suggestions like the water and the tent and she had to buy a tooth brush to. for her camping trip though. And when uncle Nate when jake almost hit him with the car and that to me was kind of funny and Zinny sounded pretty mad when she found out that the horse wasn't real. And she really did not like talking to her parents about the trail and when she thought it was hers when it really wasn't and how her parents thought it through and when they said yes she was really suprised.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In chapters 23-26,
Jake gives Zinny a wooden rocking horse. Zinny thought that he gave her a real horse, but then Bonny told her that it was wooden. Zinny was extremely disapointed when she told her! When Jake delivered the gift to Sam he told him to give it to Zinny, but he forgot who to give it to, so May claimed it for herself.

    ReplyDelete
  36. BK-
She said she was Bonnie when she was giving the secretary the note.
    Mam-
I agree with you about what you said that she blames herself for all of those things. Like you said, people share germs all the time. And with Jessie, a medallion and a snake can push somebody off their rocker, but I don't know about killing someone. Unless the snake is deadly...

I agree with you about she wants to camp along it because it will be a lot easier for her to do that than just go back home then take two hours to go back where she was.

  38. One name for Zinny that I think think should be on there is
    Zinny: the very stubborn girl.
I would give her this name because she is very stubborn, she refuses to think Jake likes her, she doesn't really think much of her self, and she says hat no one talks to her but she doesn't take the time to start the conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi bloggers how is Chasing Red bird going for you?
It's going great for me. I am anxious to know how the book ends.Zinny is getting very frustrated about her trail. I think she is over reacting, I mean everyone knows about it and theres not much you can possibly do with an old trail. She could have Jake drive her to where the trail ends and start from there and work her way to where she left off.I wonder if Zinny will ever realize Jake likes her? Probably if he explains everything to her.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have a question. Do you think that Zinny is still sad about Aunt Jessie because I think if she wasn't sad she would let somebody with. Don't you think so?

    ReplyDelete
  41. ck-
Yea why do you think that she pretended to be Bonnie? I think it was because she didn't ant to be caught, or she didn't want the secratary that she some what likes Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  42. yea I agree with what you said kk0109 yea I think that it is kind of funny that she has to come home every ten days that is if she is not dead or eaten by a bear and hopefully she leaves a note for her parent telling her parents what happend

    ReplyDelete
  43. LS0321 I did forget about the rock thanks for reminding me. CK1103 I agree with me if a grandma who acts like a little kid came after me with a broom I be freaked out. I don't know if I'd come back a second time to give the dog back. If old Mrs. Butler was there I would wait until Mr. or Mrs. Butler was there.

  44. dear people, I have read in this chapter enough to say it was funny to think of what Uncle Nate said to Jake when he almost got hit by the truck.
Jake is giving Zinny all these gifts like the dog, the ring, the wooden horse, and the bottle cap. I think that every gift besides the wooden horse and the bottle cap. some of the gifts are funny. they're funny because the bottle cap is a gift and that is a weird gift. when jake gave (sam her brother) the horse he forgot who it was for so he gave it to May.

    ReplyDelete
  45. AM-
I agree with you about how she is very stubborn. She says that nobody talks to her, but like you said, she doesn't try to talk to other people. And she's not confident in herself- like you said. I don't know, but I think that when the trail is done, Zinny will have a lot more confidence in herself.

    Zinnia Taylor: suspicious
She doesn't trust anyone. She is suspicious of any boy who acts like he likes her.She has been hurt for life by the boys who used her to get to her sister. She also thinks she can't be loved because all the people she love left (best friend) or died (aunt or cousin) or went kind of crazy (uncle). It is really sad that she can't believe Jake really loves her for her.

P.S. I know there will be people who don't agree with me, but these are my thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Zinny's plan to complete the trail is to go and camp on the trail for 10 days at a time and then come back home and check up on her family. She is going to pack first aid kit, a sleeping bag, a tarp, water, canned beans, fruit and veges, a snake bite kit, etc. At first her parents didn't want to let her go, but in the end they let her go on the trip. Zinny is very excited!
At first I thought her parents weren't going to let her go on the trip because they didn't know her too well because she doesn't talk to them much. Zinny was pretty mad when she was trying to make them let her go on the trip!

I just wanted to remind you about your opportunity to earn some extra credit through blogging. Comment on a character or event in the book that has not been posted about yet and you will receive extra points! Feel free to continue responding to other student's posts!

I noticed that many of you responded earlier in the week and fulfilled your requirements. Then many of you did not respond as thoughtfully after you were finished reading all of the chapters for the week because you were already finished. Just keep in mind that our goal is to continue keeping the conversation flowing!!

I think that she is still sad about Jessie's death. I think that the fact that she died the same day that she had shown her the medallion and snake still haunt her. I also think, that to some extent, she will never fully think that she is not to blame. I think that there will always be a part of her that blames herself for her death. I also think that if she wasn't sad about the death of her aunt she would no longer be trying to finish the trail.

  51. am-
I think that she pretended to be Bonnie because she didn't want any one to know that she had been the one that brought the letter to the school. I also think that when the secretary asked her that question, she didn't want to be herself at the moment so she said her name was Bonnie. By doing so she was able to escape the horrors that she holds in her life. Or things that she feels the blame for was then able to dissolve for a little while. I don't know, but that's probably what I would do.

  52. Zinny thinks that the only way to finish the trail will be to camp out for days at a time and clean the trail. She knows it will be lonely, but it is the only plan she has to accomplish this persuit she has been drawn to.
I think this is a pretty good plan. She gets all the things she has been wanting: she gets to finish cleaning her trail and get away from her family. It is also a good plan because she can get a lot more done then if she had to walk to and from the house for meals and things.
I think it is bad because her parent will be worrying about her the whole time she is away. It is also a bad plan because if she does get hurt she can't get the help she needs.
I foresee her changing a little while she is on the mountain, clearing the trail.(Sorry, it is "her trail" not "the trail", right?) I think she will start to miss her house and miss the crowd and miss the hussle and bussle of her everyday life.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Jake gives her (this is in order) bottle caps, cricket, turtle, 4 smooth white stones, beagle puppy, ring, and a toy horse(May took it).
I think each gift has a special meaning to something he remembered from her life or something it was something random he just wanted to give her.
Bottle caps- He remembered she collested them.
Cricket- My guess is it has something to do with making himself look smart and wanting to share this "cool" information.
Turtle- He wants her to know if it is going to rain or not, so she can plan if it ia a good day to clear the path or stay inside.
4 smooth white stones- He knew she collected it and probably wanted to show he pays attention.
Beagle puppy- He thought she was lonely and wanted to give her something that could be her friend.
Ring- He might have thought that she deserved something that was as beautifull as she was or something like that.
Toy horse- She put a wanted poster up for a real horse. He gave her a horse he could afford, a toy horse.

  54. kk & ck-
I think she is still sad about her aunts death. But I don't think that is the whole reason she won't let anyone go with. I think even if she wasn't sad she wouldn't let any one come because it is "her" trail it is the one thing she feels she and she alone owns. So she and she alone should clear it. Haven't you ever had or known something that makes you feel like you are the only one who should have it or know about it?

  55. The people in this town know a lot about what is going on in their neighbors lives. They always ask/know everything that is going on with the dogs and with Zinny's family. But I guess that is what you get in a small town.
I am reading this other book where this kid lives in a small town where everyone knows everyone. When the kid finally tells a couple of people he is about to die everyone in town knows by the end of the day. When a different kid in the book dies in a car crash at 11:00 at night everone knows by the next morning all the details of the crash.
P.S. I'm so glad our town isn't as small as the ones I'm reading about. But even in my old town/school community news travled fast. People knew my brother was in the hospitle and was a diabetic the day after he went in and was declared one.

I know, that you know, that I know, that you know what TNWM means. You finished the book. And it makes sense doesn't it? What it means? How that would represent Rose and Zinny I mean. It's kind of cool how it all started at a circus. Something that would change their worlds forever...

  58. The gifts jake gave Zinny are things that Jake knows that Zinny finds interest in like; bottle caps, a criket, a wooden horse, a stolen puppy (How romantic.) Zinny collects small trinkets just random things. I collect rocks, and shot- glasses. It's somthing I do for a hobbie. Every time I leave Iowa I look for a shot-glass to add to my collection.

  59. Zinny's plan to finish clearing her trail is to set up a campsite, clear part of her trail, go to sleep at camp, clear part of her trail the next day, move camp up closer to the un finished part of her trail, and so on and so forth. It's kind of dumb that she didn't let Jake come, because somthing bad could happen I don't know what but something.

When I wrote that when I didn't know, what you know, I know now, when I blogged that. Yes, it is kind of cool how the whole thing worked out but still it was pretty sad. It is like they are bringing back the past and everything that happened by finding the thing.
P.S. If you are not CK and don't understand this it is O.K.

    ReplyDelete
  61. LS-
You know, we're probably the only two that would read or understand what either one of us said. But yes, I agree with you. It is very sad. I mean, they're just reliving all of the things that hurt them in the first place. Do you think that what Jessie and Nate did on the trail was a good idea? I don't. What I mean by this is that, yeah, it's great that they have a place for her, but it's kind of like they won't let her die. Like they're holding on to her so tight and won't let go. It's also kind of creepy. I think this because they kept EVERYTHING! Even her cloths. If they weren't her parents, and she wasn't dead, I would be tempted to call them stalkers. But sense she is dead and they are her parents, I'll just go with the word obsessed.

Yes, I would want to remember if my only child died. However, I think that keeping all of those things wouldn't be healthy. I mean, REALLY. My aunt and uncle lost their only child when we were in third grade. Grant, he wasn't with them for four years, but they didn't keep everything. They kept most of the stuffed animals, but not for rituals, for their later children. Then they have a few pictures and things. That's what I would do. Keep a few important, or meaningful, things. Not cloths, beds, and shopping bags. Or lotion and perfume. It's scary.

Well, okay it wasn't a ritual, but still, it's weird, it's messed up and it kind of is like a ritual. Even more, Jessie and Nate kept everything and then when Jessie died, he kept all of her stuff. So, in my mind, it's kind of like a ritual. Do you agree?

    6. a prescribed or established rite, ceremony, proceeding, or service: the ritual of the dead.
    7. prescribed, established, or ceremonial acts or features collectively, as in religious services.
    8. any practice or pattern of behavior regularly performed in a set manner.
    9. a prescribed code of behavior regulating social conduct, as that exemplified by the raising of one's hat or the shaking of hands in greeting.
    10. Psychiatry. a specific act, as hand-washing, performed repetitively to a pathological degree, occurring as a common symptom of obsessive-compulsive neurosis.
That was part of the definition that you stated up there. Did you read these? I hope you did. Because to me, that sounds a lot like Nate. Do you agree? Gosh, I wish this was public. Then a third person could comment and decide if either one of us was right.
