Questions for the Week of Monday, April 13, 2009

  • Describe the main character, Zinnia Taylor.
  • Describe Zinny's relationship with her Aunt Jessie, Uncle Nate, and Cousin Rose.
  • Compare the atmosphere of Zinny's house to her Uncle Nate's house.

90 comments:

  1. Zinny's relationship with her Aunt Jessie and Uncle Nate is kind of like a parent-child relationship because of how Rose died and how they just took Zinny into their own house; in a way. So, in essence, it's a pretty good relationship. Rose and Zinny have a different kind though. Because Rose died of the whooping cough that she inherited from Zinny, Zinny feels slightly guilty, which would probably effect it. They were also born in the same month and year which probably, at the time, made them friends. But who knows?

  2. Zinna Taylor is kind of shy I think. She doesn't talk a lot she just does a lot listening. She reminds me of a really little kid. They are so scared of you and shy until they get to know you. My cousin is a lot like that too, she is even scared of her dad.

  3. ¥o,
I think that Zinny is kind of a shy person. She doesn't talk to people much except for her family and people she has known for a long time that are close to her.
Zinny's relationship with Uncle Nate and Aunt Jessie is kind of awkward. It is like a parent-child relationship, but they don't communicate very much.
Zinny's house is loud and noisy and messy. Uncle Nate's house is quiet and peaceful. Zinny calls it the quiet zone.

  4. How I would describe Zinny Taylor is, I think she is she is a more reserved child. She is shy, and not very talkative, other children or adults might think she is a challenged child or maybe just weird. She is a middle child who is very considerate and doesn't take thing for granted, she is not a selfish child and very generous. She seems like she would never get into a fight, and be a peace maker. She doesn't have a very good relationship with her parents, but she has a very strong relationship with her aunt and uncle.

  5. Zinny's relationship with her uncle Nate and aunt Jessie reminds me of of my relationship with my step-dad, after my dad died my Mom met Gary and he's been like a dad to me ever since. Although, I can see why Nate and, Jessie want to treat Zinny nicely they probably understand that she feels responsible for the death of their only child.

  6. I'm back!
I forgot something! I think that Zinny feels guilty for getting her cousin Rose sick.

    p.s. my bad

  7. The atmosphere of Zinny's house to her Uncle Nate's house is really different. Zinny's house is one of those obnoxiously loud houses. Everyone's moving, talking, there's blasts of stereos... noise that any large family would make. At Nate's part of the house, it's quiet. The "Quiet Zone", as Zinny calls it. Where she goes to get away from the hubbub and the noise of the part of the house her immediate family shares. Nate's half is filled with embroidered poems, proverbs, and pillows. "Silent as a tomb most of the time," Zinny says. And it probably is. With only the two of them and occasionally Zinny. They're also normally outside, rather than being inside most of the time like Zinny's immediate family.

  8. Zinny is a very shy young girl. She likes talking more than listening because she feels like she gets more information out of it. But she really liked her cousin Rose until she died of the whooping cough that she received from Zinny. They seemed like they loved each. You know that old three year old love. But after that she got really shy and her teachers thought she was stupid.

  9. Well Zinnia is a kind of girl that keeps to her self and is kind of shy. I do know that she is a farm girl and I am guessing that she is strong. I also wonder if she leaves the house very much because she is shy but I do know that she dose go to church. She dose know a person named Jake Boone and he moved with his family but now he is back and Zinnia knows him because they played with each other when they were young but Zinnia is still young but not as young.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Zinny house is really loud compared to her Uncle Nate's house. Someone is always on the computer, people going up and down the stairs, the stereo blasting, and the phone ringing. That would drive me insane a lot of times. I'm serious. Uncle Nate's house is really quiet. Like my house because no one is ever home. His house smells like nutmeg and cinnamon. It reminds me of a candle.

  11. I'm commenting on Mam0428, bk0323, and AM1214's comments. I agree with what they said about Zinny's personality. She does seem pretty shy and is more of a listener than a talker, just like she said in the book...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Relationship with Aunt Jessie,Uncle Nate,and Rose.
I agree with mam0428, zinnia Taylor reminds me of a kindergartener on the first day of school.shes not very bright. I think Zinnia's parents are aunt Jessie and uncle Nate Because she has a very good relationship with them. Her and rose I think were good friends.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The difference between Zinny's house and her Uncle Nate's house is that Zinny's family has a great amount of siblings and it seems they are very busy. But Uncle Nate's is very lonely because his wife and his only daughter died and he tries catching her as a red bird, but he can't catch her. That is what kk thinks of their homes!

    ReplyDelete
  14. When you compare Zinny's house with her uncle's house you would notice that they are completely opposite. In Zinny's house it is loud and crazy, the people in it are "house flowers" except for Zinny and Ben. In Uncle Nate's house it is quiet, homey, and peaceful. Nate really likes to be outside. One thing both houses are is small and not very roomy.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What up?

The atmosphere between Zinny's house and her aunt and uncles, is very different. Zinny's house is very chaotic, noisy, and messy. It is filled with children, and all other things that a person who likes quiet would not like.

The atmosphere in Aunt Jessie and Uncle Nate's house is quiet and some what old fashioned. Zinny likes it because she can relax without all the chaos and she can sit and be all by her self (with the exception of her aunt and uncle).

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with everyone who thinks that Zinny is she and is more of a listener than a talker. Wow how does this girl socialize and make any friends?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think Jake likes Zinny-not May, but I really don't want him to be like Tommy Salami.

    ReplyDelete
  18. AM1214 I think you are right about Zinny having a weak relationship with her parents. I think if Aunt Jessie and Uncle Nate had her I think she would fit in perfect, but maybe she would hang around May, Bonnie and things. Who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey guys well I think that her relationship with her uncle is good because her aunt died unexpectedly and since that happened her uncle has been kind of sad. Before her aunt died she was like a mom to her because she was always there during the day but not all of her family was there because her family was not a small one. Her relationship with her cousin rose and I think that she was a friend to her before she gave her cousin the cough and later died and I think that she felt very guilty.

  22. The house atmosphere.
aunt Jessie and Uncle Nate's house is nice, quiet, and calm.
while on the other hand zinnias house is loud, hectic, and wild.
I wouldn't like to live in that type of a house.

  24. CK,

Do you really think of loud houses as obnoxious? I guess sometimes I do if I'm in a quiet, calm mood, but usually loud houses remind me of my grandma and grandpa's farm house. Their house is often noisy and full of people, but in a fun way! You never feel lonely there. The house (and the people in it) are just so full of warmth and love! I'd love to hear what everyone else's opinions on loud house are. Do you love them or hate them?

    Ms. Steffen

  25. AM,

I agree that Zinny seems to have a very close bond with her aunt and uncle. You mentioned that you didn't think she had a strong relationship with her mom and dad. What does everyone else think? Is Zinny close with her parents? Why or why not?

    Ms. Steffen

    ReplyDelete
  26. RM and BK,

You both mention that Zinny feels guilty for her cousin, Rose's death. I agree that she seems to blame herself for a lot of bad things that happen around their house. Why do you think she feels guilty? Do you think she should feel guilty?

    Ms. Steffen

    ReplyDelete
  27. Many of you mention that Zinny is more of a listener than a talker. She likes to take everything in. She is an observer of life! Do you think that she will change and come out of her shell a bit or do you think that she will continue to be introverted and shy? Why?

    Ms. Steffen

    ReplyDelete
  28. MK,

Excellent connection to your own life! Give examples from the novel to show specifically how the relationship between Zinny and her aunt and uncle is similar to your relationship with your step-dad.

  29. My response to others blogs will be through answering Ms. Steffen's questions. This is so that I can talk about more of your blogs through one blog.
I go both ways on the loud/crazy/full houses. The thing I love is if you want to do something you have someone to do it with. The bad thing is you can never be alone, you can't do everything you want, and you have to clean up after the little ones. But all in all you have to love everyone in it even if you dont like them.
I think her aunt and uncle have a parent child bond with her. Her parents seem like they don't notice her like they do the rest of the kids, becaus she is so quiet, but they love her all the same.
I think she feels so guilty because it could have so easly been her in that drawer. She now has survivers guilt. I don't think she should feel guilty because it's not really her falt Rose died. It was chance she live and Rose died it could have went either way.
    What does introverted mean?
I agree that she listens a lot, but I get why she likes to do that, I'm the listener at my house and I barely talk. I think she will come out of her shell and get a lot more friends. I have read a lot of books like this and thats how they turn out.

    P.S.Sorry it is so long.

    ReplyDelete
  30. LS,

Fabulous post!! Don't ever apologize for a post that is too long : ) You have some excellent insight into the book and it's fun to read all of your ideas! Introverted means shy and quiet.

I agree with you. I can understand why she likes to be a listener and not talk so much. I have noticed sometimes in large groups (such as at my grandparent's farm that I mentioned earlier), that often times the quiet one that is just listening and taking everything in is the one who really comprehends what is going on because they take the time to understand everything that is happening around them. Whereas the ones that are loud and always talking often just like to hear their own voice. That is not always the case, but just an observation I've made sometimes when around large groups of people.

I'd love to hear more thoughts! Keep the posts coming!

    Ms. Steffen

  31. Zinny is quiet, misunderstood, smart, confused, and has many guilts. She likes to listen instead of talk. She likes quiet over loud. Loves the outdoors better than the indoors. Feels out of the family, away from everyone else. She feels crowded by her family and clears the path so that she can be alone. Nobody knows the real her. She has lost more out of her life than she can handle. She feels responsible for all the bad things she couldn't control. She is confused about how all of this has happen.
Sometimes I feel the same ways as her. I feel out of my family. Everyone loves electronics and being loud. I like to get a book and go to my room. I read so I can think about different things then whats around me. Nobody knows the whole me. I act totally different at home from what I act at school. But still everyone knows a little piece of me. Zinny feels out of the family. She goes outside and digs her trail, so she can think about different things. She on the other hand doesn't let anyone know any pieces of her.
How many of you feel like you are a lot different from the rest of your family?

    ReplyDelete
  32. In the beginning of chapter 6 they talk about how people, even family, will go through a whole list of names before they get to the right one. Like Bon-Gret-May-Zinny. I know how they feel. My parents will go through all of our names before they get to the right one. They will say boys names and girl names before they say the right one. So it is Girl-Boy-Boy-Boy-Me-Girl-Me then they will say my name one more time before telling me what they wanted to tell me.

    ReplyDelete
  33. LS,

I can totally relate to the name calling incident as well! I only had one brother growing up (who is 6 years younger than me) and my mom would go through a whole list of names before she called my name! Any name that started with a K-sound that was a family member was mentioned frequently. Kyle (my brother), Karen (my aunt), Ken (my uncle). Once she even threw the name Buffy in there... our family dog!! I think it's one of those parent things that we will only understand when we have kids of our own!

    Ms. Steffen

    ReplyDelete
  34. LS,

In your earlier post you said, "Nobody knows the whole me... But still everyone knows a little piece of me." What a profound statement! I think that is absolutely true for everyone. People only know the sides of us that we choose to show them.

The only person that knows the whole you is yourself. I think that's why our relationship with God is so important because He is one of the few people that knows our whole self. I think in life that the marking of a true friend is someone that you choose to show all of the sides of yourself to.

Keep up the amazing thoughts!! I am impressed!

She feels guilty for her cousins death because her cousin rose got the whooping cough from Zinnia. I also think that she is to shy she needs to get more courage.

I agree with you how you get said last because they can't remember who you are all of my Grandparents do that to me. I hate it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ms. Steffen,
I think that Zinny feels guilty because first she got sick, and then Rose caught the sickness and died from it so Zinny blames herself for it. I don't think she should blame herself for it because she can't help whether she gets someone else sick or not, unless she purposely coughed on Rose or something, but that's beside the point. If I were her I'd probably feel guilty for it too, even though I shouldn't.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Her sister May seems a little full of herself. I mean she thinks the only reason Jake was there was to talk to her. She seems to think that the whole world circles around her. She is kind of like my cousin who always talks about the boys who talk about her and about how she has a lot of friends. Do you peoples know a lot of peoples who are like this?

    ReplyDelete
  40. LS,
Yeah well I feel a lot like you but not the same. When I'm at school I'm usually like pretty much my self, I'm usually all about having fun and well being you know the way I am! At home i am more reserved usually keep to my self don't socialize (what a shocker) with any one not even my parents, and I'm usually more grumpy. I like school more than home because then all my friends are here and at home I don't live by anyone from Seton, and there is the smallest chance that my brother will actually acknowledge my existance. So I hate being home, it is the most boring thing on earth (no joke)!

  41. LS,
My grandparent/grandma doesn't do that to me, because I only have 1 sibling. That would be annoying though, especially 4 Zinny

  43. A hectic house reminds me of my Christmas on my dad's side. We even threw a chair at someone once, but I don't think Zinny's house is that dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ms. Steffen,
Sometimes I think loud houses are obnoxious, it depends on what mood I'm in, but I personally think that the way that the author makes Zinny's house seem, her loud house seems a bit obnoxious. Sometimes I do love loud houses. They make me feel like I'm in the jest of things. But it also depends on WHY the house is loud. For example, if the house is loud because of something happy, a celebration, and I'm happy, then I like it. But if a house is loud because of chaos somewhere or because of a death or something then I don't like them. At that time I would prefer to be in a quiet house like Uncle Nate and Aunt Jessie's. I also think that if I was in Zinny's situation that, like her, I would prefer the other house rather than my own house.

  45. Well Ms.S i think that Zinny feels guilty because she had whooping cough before Rose and since those two were such good Zinny spread the cough to Rose and then Rose caught the cough and had it worse so she died because of it. I would feel guilty too, but sometimes sicknesses are hard to not spread.:))
So Zinny should feel half half because it's an easy disease to spread. That must be a very tough situation to be in.:(

You show the loud side of your self at school but still you don't show your whole self. You don't show the part of you that is quiet like you act alone. I think you are most like Gretchen.

  48. In the novel assignment last night Zinny talks about how her aunt Jessie passed away. I think it was kinda weird how she got in her the drawer that her daughter Rose was layed in after she died. Why didn't Nate and Jessie just adopt or babysit to be around kids? They should have been happy to have four nieces living with them, they could bond. My Mom had a miscarriage about a year before she had me she doesn't really talk about it much. Maybe that why Jessie and Nate are so quiet.Oh I almost forgot in one of the past chapters Zinny was suspicious of aunt Jessie and uncle Nate while they were all on the trail, like they might have something to hide.I wonder what it could be, if they are hiding anything that is. Zinny found a golden medallion under a stone by the trail. If I were her I'd want to take it to that person at the museum.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wuz' up everyone,
What do you think about Uncle Nate? I think he's kind of a psycho loony. He has a good reason though, because his wife and only child died. I think Jake is weird too, because he stole a dog! Poor little puppy! I would never steal a dog, that's just mean. Your thoughts:

  52. Ms. Steffen,
In response to your comment on whether or not Zinny has a very good relationship with her parents, I think not. She doesn't really talk to them, they don't really talk to her, and it seems to me that she prefers Uncle Nate and Aunt Jessie. Towards the beginning of the book she says that she doesn't know if her mom felt that she owed Jessie or what, but that she kind of gave Zinny to her. I think that's kind of a hint at it too. At the end of the book I think their relationship will be better though.

  53. MAM and AM I also think that zinny has a weak relationship with her parents. Right now my favorite character is either Jake or Tommie. They are both very funny characters. BK why do you think Zinny feels guilty for her cousins death? why do you think Zinny likes being a follower? I think it's kind of funney that uncle Nate see's aunt jessie and whacks at any thing that even hardly resembles a snake uncle Nate is kind of funny.

Even though he stole the dog, I think Jacob has a good heart. I think he made the bad choice because he wanted to do a kind thing for someone, but didn't think about the fact that it would be hurting other people in the process. How would you feel if someone gave you a gift and you found out it was stolen?

I think that her uncle isn't a phycho. He just seems depressed. He has lost all the things to any high importance to him. If your mom, dad, and sister all died, do you think you wouldn't be a little sad?
What about the rest of you wouldn't you be sad if your whole family, parents, sisters, and brothers all died?
Her brother can also see his aunt, even though he doesn't chase her/it all over the farm.
Do you peoples think the brother is a pycho because he can see his aunt even though she is dead?
Do you think the aunt is really there or is it just a figment of their amagination?
I think it would be sadder for you if you saw your dead aunt walking around your house. Yet Zinny wants to be able to see her. How would i make you feel, happy or sad?

    ReplyDelete
  63. To LS,
Yes, I would be sad, but I wouldn't chase imaginary birds and beat a clothes-hanger and belts. I know what you mean, but still...
Also, I do not think he is a psycho. Why do you think Zinny's brother is a psycho because he can see his dead aunt? Nate can, but you don't think he's psycho?

  67. LS,

I think sometimes when people lose someone close to them, they need to feel some sort of connection to them yet. I think that when they see Aunt Jessie they are feeling that connection to her. I haven't decided if I think that they are actually seeing her spirit or if they just WANT to see her so badly that they are imagining it.

I like to think that my loved ones that passed on are still watching over me, even if I don't actually see them. I sometimes even tell them how I am feeling or what is going on in my life. Some people might think that is strange, but it makes me feel closer to them. I think the situation in the book is similar, although Aunt Jessie just passed away so the pain is more raw and they are more desperate to feel her presence.

  68. On page 65-66 in our reading assignment I thought for a moment and noticed when Zinny tied a plastic rose to the rose bush, and in December
Jessie finally went outside to see why it was still alive. She found out that it was fake and she was disappointed that it was fake. She said "I so much wanted that rose to be alive." I think she veiews the flower, rose as her daughter Rose.

    ReplyDelete
  69. MK,

I think you are absolutely right! I felt so sorry for Zinny because she thought she was doing something nice for Aunt Jessie and it ended up making her sad and angry to realize that the rose was fake.

I think Aunt Jessie saw those roses as a symbol of her daughter, Rose, too. Each time she saw the flower roses die I think it made her think of her daughter dying, so when she thought one rose survived during the winter months she felt hopeful. Excellent observation!

I never said her brother was a psycho. I asked if YOU thought he was a psycho? I think her brother is imagining his aunt being there. I don't think Nate is a psycho I think he too is just imagining his wife being there.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ms. Steffen,
In one of your posts you mention that you like to feel that your deceased loved ones are still watching over you or with you in a sense. Sometimes when I'm sad, and I want comfort I feel like someone hugs me. I like to think that possibly that's a person that I loved trying to comfort me. That probably sounds like I'm a babbling lunitic, but that's how I feel. It makes me kind of feel like I haven't completely lost them yet, that they are still there in spirit, or maybe it's just a figment of my imagination.

    ReplyDelete
  72. LS,
I agree with you. I don't think that Zinny's brother or Uncle Nate are crazy, I think that's it's simply their way to coop. For Nate I think that it's more him losing that major person in his life, probably his best friend. I think that the reason that he hits things that slightly resemble snakes is because those were the one things in the world that Jessie absoletuly despised. For him I think it's kind of his way at getting back at the world for her dieing.
I disagree with you about Jessie just being a figment of their imagination. I think that it's the part of her that lives on in their hearts that they see. I'm taking this from HP, but Dumbledore says, "I will never be gone from Hogwarts, unless the people there stop believing." Or something along those lines. I think that it's the same with Jessie. She will never be completely gone, unless people stop loving, or believing in her.

  73. I think that Jake stole the puppy, because, puppies kind of stand, for some people, love and comfort and happiness. So, I don't think that Jake was really thinking about the fact that he was stealing when he took the dog, I don't even think that he actually stole the dog. I think it just kind of happened. But I think that the reason he even took Gobbler was because he wanted him to represent love, comfort, and happiness to Zinny. The main reason I think that he did it all though, is because he wanted to have Zinny like him more than he thought that she did. I'm not saying what he did was right, because it wasn't, but I think he had his reasons for doing what he did.

He is saying that if you ask for his help and you are loyal to him then his bird will come, not really him. So when Harry says, "Dumbledore is the best wizard in the world," he called Dumbledore's bird to him, because he was loyal to Dumbledore.
But you did make me change my mind. She probably is living on in there heart and not just a figment of their imagination.
I also agree with the whole Uncle Nate getting back at the world by killing snakes.

That doesn't count you don't talk about Chasing Redbird in the last post.

For your information, "Chasing Red Bird" needs to be in underlines or quotes on your last post; other wise it is incorrect puncutation(I know, I spelled that wrong.) But it is a pretty good book. Even you admitted you liked how the trail ties in with things.

ps-This is the last post. I am laughing out loud(in my head.)

Chasing Redbird can have quotes but since it is a novel
    -------------------- it should be underlined.
P.S. Use you amagination so that the "-" signs look like they are underlining the title.

  81. OK? And you still didn't underline or put quotes around the title, LS.

I get what you mean now. Never mind. I guess if you look at it a different way, it's kind of underlined...

So, this conversation is kind of over. I can't even say let's talk about hot dogs because that wouldn't be about the book. This is horrible. What should we do? I don't want to leave this conversation talking about underlines. That's lame.

PS- I did talk about the book because I said book. So HaHa!

  85. Wait, that was a creepy post. Just erase it from your mind, don't think about it. BBBBBLLLLLLUP! We just rewinded your mind and you never read that.

If you really didn't want me to read your post you would have deleted it. It wasn't the best conversation, I mean it was about how, why, and when you under line the title. I mean we could have just underlined it by saying, Chasing Redbird (the title is underlined) then going on with the sentence. Example- Chasing Redbird (the title is underlined) is a good book.
    You know what I mean.
